Graduating students attended the School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s Résumé and Cover Letter workshop Monday to gain insight on what will make them stick out in a stack of applications.

John Butte, practitioner in residence in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, was able to put together the event to help graduating seniors become marketable for the upcoming Job Expo 2013.

“Employers are looking for what can you do on the job, what will you do on the job, and will you fit in,” Butte said.

Jan Leach, associate professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, presented on résumés and cover letters for journalism students. Leach explained the dos and don’ts in a slideshow presentation.

“You have to find the qualifications that make you unique,” Leach said

Ryan McNaughton, career counselor in Career Services presented on the uses of social media, such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

“Eighty-six percent of recruiters are looking at us online,” McNaughton said stating 2012 statics from Jobvite.com. “Most companies, it’s the first thing they will do when they receive your résumé.”

Both Leach and McNaughton stressed the importance of accuracy.

“We want just the facts,” Leach said. “No embellishments.”

The same workshop will be presented April 1 in Franklin Hall in room 340.
