TV2 Sports Predict MAC Tournament
March 11, 2013
The TV2 Sports Team shared their opinion on who will win the Mid-American Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Cris Ross (TV2 Sports Reporter)
Kent State has a big chance to take the MAC tourney. With a big win over Akron on Friday and Akron’s loss of their point guard that moves Kent State in contention. Also the big wins over other conference opponents like Buffalo and Bowling Green just recently are good momentum booster going into the MAC tournament. Kent State has the the players that can wear every team they play out and with the way the team has been playing of late has the best chance to take it all.
Jacob Corcoran (Sports Corner Anchor)
The Akron Zips will win the MAC Tournament. The nineteen game winning streak they put together was far beyond impressive. I don’t think there is any peaking with this team, they are that good. Any team can win it, as we have seen in the past five years, but Akron is the team to beat in the MAC.
Jon Jankowski (Sports Director)
Kent State. They are hot at the right time. Randal Holt has lost in heartbreaking fashion the past three years. Holt’s freshman year the Golden Flashes were upset by a 9 seed, his sophomore and junior year the Flashes were eliminated by rival Akron. Number 3 is on mission to make one NCAA tournament before he graduates.
Andy Jardy (Friday Sports Anchor)
With Abreu’s suspension, the tournament is wide open now. Ohio becomes the favorite but I am going to take Kent State. The Golden Flashes are playing their best basketball of the season and peaking at the right time. Plus, why not continue the trend of K-S-U athletics making it to the big stage? Baseball and football did it this year, basketball is due.
Christian Petrila(Monday Web Sports Anchor)
My gut says the Flashes will find a way to win the tourney. The big thing they lacked earlier this season was an ability to finish the close games. Lately, though, they’ve been able to come through and hit an extra gear toward the end of games (the Akron and Buffalo games stand as proof). They’re peaking at the right time, and with Akron shorthanded and Ohio showing a few weaknesses, the Flashes could definitely make a run.
Gabriel Kramer (Wednesday Sports Anchor)
The Ohio Bobcats will win the MAC Tournament. D.J. Cooper is the only player in NCAA history with 2000 points, 900 assists, 600 rebounds and 300 steals and always seems to find some magic in March. As arguably the greatest MAC player of all time, he can lead this team to another NCAA tournament run. For the rest of the MAC– beware of the ides of March.
Mike Drake (Friday Flashcast Sports)
In wake of the Alex Abreu arrest and the recent play by Kent State men’s team, I can not see the tournament ending any other way than the Golden Flashes taking the trophy. I feel Akron will fall apart in the semifinals and it will result in an Ohio vs Kent State final. Despite Ohio defeating Kent State two times during the regular season, it was a single possession, down to the wire ending in both games. I don’t see that happening again in the MAC tourney. Kent State over Ohio 68-62.
Alison Reilly(Sports Reporter)
As much as I hate to be the one to say it won’t be Kent, I have to go with Ohio. I hope I am proved wrong, and we are on a good run going into the tournament, but Ohio has shown more consistency and they’ve beaten us both times this season when we had chances to take it from them. However, I believe we will get to the final after beating Akron again in the semi-finals. Go Flashes!
Kyle Vertoch(Wednesday Flashcast Anchor)
The team that has simply been on a ferocious tear all season long is the Akron Zips. Zeke Marshall and Demetrius Treadwell are dominating, both combining to average 24 points per game and 14 rebounds. The biggest competition they have in the MAC is the Ohio Bobcats. The best thing the Bobcats do is pass the ball. The team is leading the nation in assists with 18 per game. It should be a tight MAC tournament with Kent State and Buffalo not going away quietly, but in the end, I’m going with Akron.
Cory York (Monday Sports Anchor)
The winner will come from the MAC East. Last week it was clear cut with Akron winning the MAC tournament easily, but with Abreu suspended and losing two in a row heading into their double bye it will not be as easy for the Zips. Ohio has the experience from last year’s Sweet 16 run and Kent State has been finding ways to win late in games by winning 5 straight and 7 of 8. I predict the Party City Kitties (Ohio) to win the tournament for the second straight season. Their only two losses came against Akron, one in OT, and Akron is playing their worst basketball all season. Kent State will give Ohio a fit in the Semis but they haven’t been able to close out DJ Cooper down the straight. It will be an exciting couple of days, let the Madness begin.
Hunter Austin (Wednesday Web Sports Anchor)
I believe that Ohio will win the MAC Men’s Basketball tourney. They took my previous favorite, Akron into overtime the last time they played at the end of February. Now Akron is without their starting point guard, Alex Abreu, as he faces legal issues with drug charges placed on him last week. The loss of a point guard can really throw off an offense. I believe Ohio will ride D.J. Cooper to a MAC Tournament title.
