Say What?*&! series to highlight LGBTQ slurs
March 19, 2013
Kent State will continue its Say What?*&! dialogue series 7 p.m. Wednesday with “Dude, You’re Such a Fag!” in the Multicultural Lounge of the Kent Student Center.
This installment in the series focuses on vernacular and the origin of common slang terms regarding sexuality. Roxie Patton, program coordinator of the LGBTQ Center, has planned the talk to take a closer look at how certain slang terminology originates.
“It’s really talking about what we’re saying, what it means, why we’re using that terminology and better understanding why we shouldn’t use the terminology that we’re using,” Patton said. “Instead of just saying, ‘Don’t say ‘no homo,’’ we’ll be talking about where that phrase really comes from and why we feel the need to predicate everything by saying ‘no homo.’”
The event is sponsored by the LGBTQ Center, Student Multicultural Center, Women’s Center and Office of Health Promotions. For more information, contact Patton at 330-672-8580 or [email protected].
