Two high school football players will go on trial this week on charges of raping a 16-year-old girl at a party in Steubenville. The girl was drunk and nearly passed out. The athletes were arrested last summer amid many rumors. One rumor that proved to be true was that three boys witnessed the rape and did nothing to stop it. Two of the boys filmed the incident on their cellphones. (read full story)
Gregory G. Rodriguez, the host of the Sportsman Channel’s “A Rifleman’s Journal,” was shot and killed in Northwestern Montana on Thursday. The channel released a statement expressing condolences and its appreciation for Rodriguez. Police said another man who was jealous of the TV host shot him while he was visiting the shooter’s wife. Rodriguez is survived by his wife and two children. (read full story)
During a boat race in Southern California Friday, a sailor died and five others had to be rescued after sending a mayday call during the race. The boat’s crew declined help from the Coast Guard and other boaters as their boat drifted in rough waters toward a rocky shore. The crew in trouble called for help after the 32-foot sailboat lost its steering ability. The boat began to drift toward San Clemente Island, where it broke apart. Stormy ocean conditions prevented a towboat from getting to them.
Justin Bieber was booed for arriving late to a show, struggled to breathe mid-performance and then fainted backstage while on tour in London. On Friday, the 19-year-old pop star had an altercation with British paparazzi where he lashed out at a photographer. At his final concert in London, he performed up to expectations of the fans with no trouble breathing. The singer vented to millions of fans on Twitter. He said, “”Ahhhhh! Rough morning. Trying to feel better for this show tonight but let the paps get the best of me.”
Islamic extremists claimed to have killed seven foreign hostages that had been kidnapped in Nigeria, European diplomats said Sunday. Both England and Italy confirmed the deaths of those taken from northern Bauchi on Feb. 16. A group known as Ansaru kidnapped them. Greece also confirmed one of its citizens was killed, however, Lebanese officials did not comment. This is considered the worst foreign abduction in the West African nation in decades. The hostages were taken from a construction company’s camp. Those kidnapped included four from Lebanon, one from Britain, Greece and Italy.
