This year’s flu shot is only 9 percent effective in people 65 and older, which is the most susceptible age group to the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday, the vaccine is not protecting elderly from the harsh flu. Drew Peterson, the former Chicago-area police officer, became infamous for the disappearance of his fourth wife. He was sentenced to 38 years in prison Thursday for the murder of his third wife. Moments before his sentencing, Peterson shouted his innocence in the courtroom stating, “I did not kill Kathleen [Savio].” After his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared authorities reevaluated Savio’s death. Mrs. Peterson still has not been found.

Police said a deadly car shooting and crash at a popular Las Vegas Strip intersection began in the valet area of the Aria Resort and Casino. Las Vegas Sheriff Doug Gillespie said Thursday the incident killed three people and injured six. Police are still looking for the driver and occupants of a black Range Rover that fled the scene after shooting at another car and hitting a taxi. The intersection where the incident occurred is home to casinos including the Bellagio and Caesars Palace.

The United Nations rejected a claim for damages of more than 5,000 Haitian cholera victims and their families Thursday. The U.N. stated their reason was diplomatic immunity. A Boston-based human rights group, the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, filed the claim in Nov. 2011. The group said the U.N. is responsible for failing to screen peacekeeping soldiers in the country and is seeking monetary compensation for the Haitians affected.
