Kent State University students will have the opportunity to audition to participate in the production of “The Vagina Monologues” on February 26 and 27.

“The Vagina Monologues” is an Obie award-winning play by Eve Ensler. According to Eveensler.org, the monologues cover a wide range of “forbidden” topics to raise awareness about violence against women and girls.

Roxie Patton, program coordinator for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Center, is the director of the production. She, Cassandra Pegg-Kirby, assistant director of the Women’s Center, and Jennifer O’Connell, education intervention coordinator for the Sexual Assault Response Team, will be casting the production.

Auditions are not open. People interested in being in the play or members of the stage crew must first register on the Women’s Center website. Those who wish to help backstage do not have to audition.

The registration form will allow those interested to pick a time slot and a preferred role they’d like to try out for. The audition will include a cold-reading of some select monologues from the play. Auditions will be in groups of three for approximately one hour.

Patton is enthusiastic about the production and the opportunity to put her background in theater to good use.

“It’s very exciting” she said. “Gives me a chance to use my bachelor’s degree in theater.”
