School safety is at the forefront of many debates. Most schools throughout the country have not updated their security plans since the Columbine High School shootings in 1999. For decades schools have used lockdown as a safety method. This consists of students and teachers locking the doors and hiding in a corner of the classroom. This puts the victims right in the assailants’ hands, because everyone is in one area. A.L.I.C.E incorporates the lockdown procedure but also gives faculty, staff and students the ability to defend themselves and use items around the school to distract the assailant. Kent City Schools, Director of Business Servies Jim Soyars held an A.L.I.C.E training for the Kent City Schools staff Friday, January 18, 2013.
