Our View: Road trip
December 3, 2012
Flashes fans cheered and waved their yellow towels proudly at Ford Field in Detroit Friday.
Every big play for Kent State was followed by an eruption from one half of the arena, and the energy was palpable throughout the nearly four-hour game.
No matter how focused athletes are on the task at hand, they undoubtedly notice when they receive support in the middle of the game.
Despite being statistically dominated throughout the contest, the Flashes fought back to force double overtime, and the fans showed their appreciation accordingly.
So, here we are.
The team fell just short of the Mid-American Conference Championship, but the team will still play in its first bowl game in four decades, and the Daily Kent Stater editorial board is calling on you to take one last road trip to support the team.
The Flashes have earned an invitation to the GoDaddy.com Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. They will take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves at 8:00 p.m. Jan. 6 in Ladd Peebles Stadium.
While most of us have to worry about final exams and papers, we think you should consider treating yourself to a mini vacation and take part in the GoDaddy.com Bowl.
A round-trip plane ticket will cost you $200, and a hotel will be about $130 for three days. This is a bit of an investment, but how many chances will you have to watch your classmates compete in the biggest game of their lives?
If you ask alumni from the past 40 years — you might not get this chance again soon.
So, pick up a few hours at work, do some Christmas-season chores for your parents or start chugging orange juice and donate blood and/or plasma.
After the exciting year the team has given us, let’s give back to them and show that the Kent State student body has their back — no matter where they are.
