Speed networking event to help student entrepreneurs
November 14, 2012
The Kent State Alumni Association and Blackstone Launchpad are collaborating for the first time to plan a “speed networking” event for student entrepreneurs.
“Golden Flashes: Past and Present Entrepreneurs” features topics about bootstrapping, marketing, social media and pitching. The event is 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 306 of the Kent Student Center.
“This isn’t just another networking event,” said Zach Mikrut, marketing manager of Blackstone Launchpad. “This ‘speed networking’ event will expose students to various topics in a structured way. It’s a great opportunity for students to take advantage of.”
During the first hour of the event, small groups of students will rotate to different tables, which will have specific topics and two to three alumni with entrepreneurial experience.
“This is the first time doing a networking event focusing on entrepreneurship,” said Carrie Circosta, assistant director of student and recent graduate programs at the Alumni Association. “We were contacted by the Blackstone Launchpad and thought this type of event would be beneficial for anyone aspiring to start a business.”
The second hour of the event will feature casual networking, questions and a chance to meet fellow alumni and students.
There are currently 12 professionals registered to attend. This number could increase, Circosta said.
“Networking is extremely important, no matter what your major is. When it comes to starting a business or helping your business grow, connections are important,” Circosta said. “We have several successful alumni who own their own businesses and willing to provide advice to help future entrepreneurs.”
Students from all majors and minors are welcome to attend.
“I think this event is really applicable to all majors,” said junior architecture major Matthew Nykamp. “Everyone can learn a thing or two about starting his or her own business.”
Registration is required, Mikrut said. Students interested in attending should contact Mikrut at [email protected] or 330-672-6700.
