BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — With a trip the Mid-American Conference game at stake, the Kent State football team came up big when it mattered and came away with its biggest win in 40 years.
The Flashes held on to defeat the Bowling Green State University Falcons 31-24 Saturday to clinch the MAC East division title.
Kent State (10-1, 7-0 MAC) will now meet the Northern Illinois Huskies Nov. 30 at Ford Field in Detroit with the winner claiming a conference championship.
Head coach Darrell Hazell said this was a wonderful win for the program and for anyone who has ever been associated with it.
“To think what this team has accomplished here this season and the end of last season is just mind-boggling to me,” Hazell said. “It just tells you that when guys put their minds to something, so much can be accomplished. I can’t be more proud of our players and our coaches. I’m extremely happy for our guys.”
The game stayed close throughout the afternoon, as the Flashes and Falcons exchanged scores and leads multiple times. Hazell said he knew it would be a hard-fought game from the very start.
“That’s a good football team we just played,” Hazell said. “We knew it was a good football team, and we knew they weren’t going to go away.
Kent State took the first lead of the game in the second quarter on a 32-yard field goal by senior kicker Freddy Cortez.
After the Falcons were forced to punt, junior running back Dri Archer extended the Flashes’ lead with an explosive 79-yard touchdown run up the middle. Archer compiled a career-high 241 yards in the game.
Bowling Green came right back on the very next play from scrimmage, as Falcons quarterback Matt Schilz found receiver Chris Gallon on a touchdown pass from 72 yards out. The Falcons followed that by recovering a Kent State fumble and converting it into points on a 30-yard field goal — tying the game up at 10.
In the second half, the Falcons offense snatched the lead away on their first drive when Schilz threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Shaun Joplin. Schilz finished the game with a season-high 355 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Senior quarterback Spencer Keith brought the Flashes back on the next drive, completing a pass to senior wide receiver Eric Adeyemi for a 32-yard score. The two teams were once again tied — at 17 this time — as the game moved into the fourth quarter.
Archer took a handoff from Keith early in the fourth quarter, made a mesmerizing move to avoid a tackle, and sprinted 74 yards for a touchdown to put Kent State back in the lead. Archer said the coaches told him before the drive to hold onto the ball and to not go down.
“The whole time, I was thinking in my head to just hold on to it,” Archer said. “A guy jumped on my back, and I just sort of ducked him and cut across the field. I saw Spencer (Keith) running up the field, so I just cut behind his block and ended up in the end zone.”
For the second time in the game, Bowling Green responded immediately to an Archer touchdown. Schilz swung a pass to Gallon, who broke a couple of tackles and sprinted 81 yards into the end zone. The Falcons closed the gap once again and tied the contest at 24.
Later in the fourth quarter, Schilz’ pass over the middle was tipped by junior defensive tackle Roosevelt Nix and intercepted by junior defensive end Richard Gray. The Flashes capitalized on the field position and moved the ball down inside the Falcons’ 10-yard line.
On second down and goal, Keith faked a handoff to Archer and ran the ball into the end zone himself for a seven-yard touchdown to give the Flashes a 31-24 lead.
The Falcons had once last chance, driving the ball to the Kent State 17-yard line. Schilz’s throw to the end zone was intercepted by junior safety Luke Wollet.
Hazell said clinching the division was a great feeling, but the team still has work to do.
“We still have a big game against Ohio next Friday,” Hazell said. “And obviously we’re going to play a great Northern Illinois team in a couple weeks. They’re all challenges for us.”
The Flashes will take on the Ohio University Bobcats at 11 a.m. Friday in Dix Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
