Volleyball team earns a split on Homecoming weekend
October 21, 2012
The Kent State Golden Flash volleyball team wrapped up Homecoming weekend with a record of 1-1. Friday night, the Golden Flashes started the home stand with a contest against the Western Michigan Broncos.
The Broncos won the match in four sets and stayed on top of the Mid-American Conference West division. Saturday night, the Flashes had a homecoming show down against the Northern Illinois Huskies. The Flashes took the match in four sets and the win snapped a four-game conference losing streak.
With the spilt, the Flashes record moved to 6-16 overall, and 3-7 in the MAC. First year Head coach of the Flashes Don Gromala was pleased in what he saw from the team.
“We felt really good after this weekend,” Gromala said. “We played at a high level pretty consistently and made teams have to really earn any points they got.”
Despite what Gromala saw in the both games, he said there was still room for improvement in the Western Michigan match.
“We talked about sustaining the leads by not giving up big point scoring runs to our opponents. Against Western Michigan, we would have a big lead and give a bunch of point’s right back to them,” Gromala stated. “Against Northern Illinois, our passing was much more stable.
Fridays match against Western Michigan kicked off a five game home stand for the Golden Flashes. The team will be back home to the M.A.C. Center Friday against Bowling Green, and the home stretch will wrap up Nov. 1 against Ohio University.
