The Kent State Golden Flashes soccer team split its weekend games with a 2-1 win against Marshall Friday and its first loss of the season to the Duquesne Dukes 2-1 on Sunday.
Kent State scored against Marshall first in the 14th minute when freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Senn sent the ball to sophomore Stephanie Haugh, who then headed the ball to junior Jaclyn Dutton who scored her seventh goal of the season.
Marshall leveled the score in the 86th minute sending the game into overtime. The Flashes defeated Marshall in overtime with Haugh scoring in the 107th minute.
In Sunday’s game, Duquesne lead with goals in the 1:53 mark on a fast break 15 yards out and again in the 7th minute from inside the box by Morgan Herbert.
“I think we need to bring a lot more desire and fight for an entire 90 minutes,” said head coach Rob Marinaro about the team’s performance. “I think we started off and the intensity level was nowhere near what it needs to be.”
Dutton recorded her eighth goal of the season in the 65th minute to make it a one-goal difference. The Flashes out shot Duquesne 17-13 and continued to fight with their final scoring opportunity in the last 30 seconds by Dutton, but Dukes goalkeeper Devon Tabata was able to grab the ball.
“I think we need to take this weekend as a learning experience and take it as motivation going into conference and make sure that we’re coming out a lot harder and just bring this into next weeks practice and kick some butt next weekend,” senior Sara Henderson said.
The Golden Flashes held its Senior Day and fundraiser “Kick CF” during the match against Duquesne. The team reached their goal of $500 before the game and is hoping to have added a couple hundred more.
Senior forward Megan Repas described the Senior Day ceremony before the game as “surreal.”
“It’s just kind of like an almost sentimental, very sad but kind of you’ve done it,” Repas said. “You’ve been here for four years, played your heart out for four years and its kind of a rewarding kind of thank you.”
Kent State begins its Mid-American Conference schedule with matches on the road against Central Michigan on Friday and Bowling Green on Sunday.
