Kent State’s Liquid Crystal Institute will be hosting a two-day symposium Wednesday and Thursday that includes some of the world’s leading researchers in flexible displays and related technologies, according a university press release.

Kent State students, faculty and staff are invited to sit among researchers and other field experts to hear what the next step in liquid crystal displays will be among other special topics.

“It’s an area where we do a great deal of research [and] have taken a leadership position,” symposium chair John West said. “ … So it is an opportunity to bring the leading researchers in the world to campus to discuss that topic.”

The iPhone and Kindle are popular technologies that use liquid crystal displays and are being used worldwide.

Michael McCreary, deputy chief technology officer of the E Ink Corporation, which produces the Kindle, will be the keynote speaker Wednesday.

“The liquid crystal display kind of dominates the industry,” West said. “The first talk will be on where the industry is going worldwide, and then we’re going to highlight two technologies that are being made locally.”

The symposium is free to students, faculty and staff. The symposium will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday. A tour of the Liquid Crystal Institute will be given at the end of the symposium Thursday.
