For the first time in three years, Kent State expects to have enough beds for all incoming students to begin the fall semester.

Betsy Joseph, Residence Services director, said the problem in the past had been students who decided on student housing only days before the semester had begun. Normally, 50 to 100 students who were expected to live on campus don’t, and the goal for Residence Services is to operate as close to occupancy as possible.

Any overflow students are put into transitional housing. In some dormitories, this means a few students living in the lobbies until additional rooms are available, a process that takes nearly three weeks.

Between the size of the class and the amount of beds being installed on campus — some single rooms have been converted to double — Joseph said she is confident the university will operate competently without the use of transitional housing.
