The Kent State men’s and women’s choruses will perform their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ located at 1400 E. Main St.

Kerry Glann, associate music professor and the conductor for the men’s and women’s choruses, said the concert is a joint performance including both choruses.

“This is our culminating spring concert,” Glann said. “It’s the music we’ve been working on all semester. I am the director of both choruses, and I am assisted by Natalie Reitz. We try to program in a way that it’s good music, but also engaging and entertaining for the students and the audience.“

Glann said the concert includes a variety of styles, genres and time periods.

“There’s a variety of both sacred and secular music,” Glann said. “There are also a couple Spanish pieces. The men’s chorus is doing a couple [of] pieces with a war theme, and another highlight for the men’s chorus is a piece that will feature a faculty member, Timothy Culver, as a soloist.”

Glann said both groups will perform the final piece of the concert.

“It’s a gospel song called ‘Praise His Holy Name,’” he said. “Even though the choruses are separate, we try to do a combined piece every year or every semester.”

Both choruses have auditions, but the group is open to non-music majors, said Glann.

“It provides a good opportunity, particularly for non-music majors, to get involved,” Glann said. “The majority of members of both are non-majors.”

The choruses like to go off-campus whenever they can, said Glann.

“We do performances in schools because part of our mission is to do outreach for the university and to demonstrate the quality of the music program we have here,” he said. We want to let them know that the singing opportunities are there.”

Tickets available at the door for $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and free for Kent students with their ID.
