Greek community hosts pair of events
March 28, 2012
Kent State will be buzzing tonight with a pair of philanthropy events put on by the Greek community.
While sports fans are preparing for the Final Four, Delta Gamma is bringing their own version of a basketball tournament to Kent State.
The sisters of Delta Gamma will be hosting Anchor Slam, a five-on-five basketball tournament between the sororities and fraternities. The entry fee for each team is $50.
“This is the first time that we have held this event in four years,” said Jenna Rutz, junior intervention specialist major. “We are hoping to make it very successful and keep this an annual philanthropy.”
In conjunction with the basketball tournament, Delta Gamma also hosted an all-Greek ice skate on Wednesday night.
All the proceeds from the skating event and the basketball tournament will benefit Sight for Service, a foundation which provides children with vision loss new glasses, free Braille books and other items that can help these less fortunate children learn.
The event will be Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
Meanwhile, the fraternity brothers of Delta Sigma Phi, Sigma Tau Gamma and members of TV2 are hosting an annual philanthropy event: Pizza Wars.
Everyone who wishes to attend will pay $5 to get in the door. All participants will receive a bingo sheet that allows them to try a slice of pizza from each of the participating pizza parlors. The pizza shops for this year include: Belleria (who won in 2011), Rosie’s, Domino’s, Papa John’s, EuroGyro, Pizza Hut, Hungry Howie’s and Little Caesars. Each customer will also get three tickets to vote on their favorite pizza.
“They can use all three tickets on one restaurant, or split them up,” said Sterling Hanak, junior English major.
Pepsi has also agreed to donate beverages this year.
This year there will also be a Greek eating contest, where participants will be encouraged to consume one pizza from every place. The entry fee for the eating contest is $10.
All proceeds will benefit Townhall II, a women’s shelter located in Kent.
The event will be Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Student Center. The doors of the cafeteria on the second floor will open at 6:30.
