As I have stated in some of my past opinion articles, the small amount of bipartisanship (or lack thereof) in this generation’s political field is appalling. Some GOP Congressmen have made it their mission as legislators not to do what they can and work with the Democrats to better serve the country, but to make Barack Obama a “One-Term President.”
Even the Republican candidates running for the GOP nomination (with the exception of Ron Paul) have made the primaries into a “who-hates-and-is-least-like-Obama-contest,” basing their electability on how many times they have disagreed with the president on everything.
Every time I hear about President Obama doing something, whether it’s good, bad or just minding his own business, the Republican Party somehow twists it to be that the president is slowly dismantling our nation.
Recently, Obama really messed up at a nuclear security summit in South Korea when he was talking to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. An open mic caught Obama telling Medvedev that after this election, he would “have more flexibility” about nuclear missile defense. I cringed at the thought of what the GOP was going to do to him.
This was legitimately something they could get on him about and they spared no time as many GOP members, including primary frontrunner Mitt Romney, attacked Obama for his slip.
Romney, the supposed “leader” for the Republican Party commented, “This is no time for our president to be pulling his punches with the American people. And not telling us what he’s intending to do with regards to our missile defense system, with regards to our military might and with regards to our commitment to Israel and with regard to our absolute conviction that Iran must [not] have a nuclear weapon.”
One by one, a sour note tore through the GOP, questioning Obama’s authority yet again. But, out of the blue, one Republican figure stood up for Obama.
But imagine my surprise when the man who spoke up in Obama’s defense was none other than Republican House Speaker, John Boehner. Boehner, of all people! Could you imagine? He is anti-Obama.
It was his sole mission to bring down Obama by whining about everything he does. But when asked about Obama’s mic slip, Boehner told reporters, “When the president is overseas, I think it’s appropriate that people not be critical of him or our country. Clearly what’s gone on in Russia over the last couple of years raises some concerns.”
I thought I would never see the day when John Boehner would stick up for President Obama against his fellow Republicans, but here I stand as I live and breathe.
And even more so, I never thought that I would ever form the following words in the same sentence but I’m proud of John Boehner for putting an end to all this childish nonsense.
I’d like to see a little bit more of that on Capitol Hill but for now, kudos.
