It’s no surprise fans of “The Hunger Games” are in uproar over the record-breaking film adaptation of the best-selling series. When readers experience the terror of the fight-for-your-life competition in print, they create their own realm and appearance of characters, and they don’t want to see someone else’s vision trump their own.

While the film raked in cash from around the world last weekend, racist fans took to Twitter to show displeasure for certain casting choices, and we’re disgusted.

MovieFone.com posted examples of what disgruntled fans tweeted: “why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie,” “Kk call me racist but when I found out rue was black her death wasn’t as sad. #ihatemyself,” “Awkward moment when Rue is some black girl and not the little blonde innocent girl you picture.”

We were taken aback by these comments, and so were plenty of others.

Most accounts that posted offensive remarks disappeared or issued apologies, but some posters attempted to lighten up the situation with distasteful humor.

“I hear that Donald Trump is trying to prove that Rue wasn’t even BORN in Panem,” “why does Frederick Douglass have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined abolition,” “why does the Harlem Renaissance have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the New Negro Movement.” Wow.

This ignorance and racism isn’t just offensive; it’s uncalled for. The unhappy “fans” seemed most shocked with Rue — who is described as “a twelve-year-old girl from District 11. She has dark brown skin and eyes, but other than that’s she’s very like Prim in size and demeanor” in the book — was played by a perfectly cast Amandla Stenberg. It’s disappointing that her tear-jerking performance was overshadowed by blatant hatred and idiocy.
