“Teach, reach, feed, lead,” is the motto for the Kent State Campus Kitchen, which was recently recognized at a Campus Kitchen Project national convention.

On Oct. 28-30, members of Kent State’s Campus Kitchen traveled to St. Louis, for the conference, titled, “Moving a Generation,” where they won an education and operations award.

“We won the award for incorporating learning videos for teaching people how to use knives so they would be more equipped to get a job,” said Lisa Hofer, senior hospitality major.

The Campus Kitchen, which is a student-run non-profit organization located in Beall Hall, tries to recover food from events, farmers markets and grocery stores. Volunteers take the food and recreate it into healthy delicious meals for local shelters. Kent State has one of 30 kitchens across the United States.

“The kitchen is also involved with many outreach programs that help teach members of shelters how to cook,” Hofer said.

Members of Campus Kitchen also visit schools to educate students to eat healthier and not to eat fast food. The kitchen has between 15 and 40 volunteers from campus as well as the community.

“I thought it was a great way to give back to the community,” Hofer said about why she joined the kitchen in March when it opened. She said the kitchen is trying to create better sustainability throughout the community by having less food waste.
