Robinson is best known for his role as Darryl Philbin on the NBC hit show “The Office,” which aired the first episode of its eighth season Sept. 22. Robinson has also played a spectrum of characters in different films including “Pineapple Express,” “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and “Hot Tub Time Machine.” When Robinson isn’t banning Michael from using the bailer, being a henchman for a murderer, producing a porno or traveling through time via hot tub, he is doing stand-up comedy.

Guess which one brings him to Kent State University?

Candra Chambell, junior fashion design major, bought her ticket for the show Wednesday. Chambell, who is from California, said

“I told a lot of my friends back home about this, and they’re super jealous.”

Chambell said she loved Robinson in “Hot Tub Time Machine” and “Zack and Miri,” and although she frequented comedy clubs in California, she has not had the chance to see Robinson before now.

“I like him because he has the off-the-cuff remarks,” Chambell said. “And you almost don’t hear what he says, and then you’re like ‘Did he just say that?’”

Tkeyah Williams and Daychelle Thomas, freshmen exploratory majors, said they didn’t recognize Robinson. “I don’t really know any comedians,” Thomas said. Both girls agreed that they’d rather spend their money on a concert.

Greg Porter, junior visual communication design major, recognized Robinson from “The Office” and his appearance on “Last Comic Standing.” Porter said he thinks he is really funny and would go, but he has other obligations.

“His sense of humor is basically playful and a little low-brow at times, but appropriately so,” Porter added.

Box Office Manager Joe Carr said 450 tickets were sold by Wednesday, but he anticipates another 200 to 300 tickets will be sold before the show today.

“It’s been that way the past several shows we’ve had,” said Carr. “We sell the most leading up to the final day.”

Carr said the Kent Student Center Ballroom holds about 1,000 people; so selling out would be a bit of a reach but possible. Carr said he anticipates the ballroom will be 80 percent full at least.

Donna Carlton, Undergraduate Student Government advisor, said, “one of the things that does very well for us is our comedians.”

Carlton said before being in her current position, she never had much knowledge of the stand-up-comedy world.

“That’s a hard thing to do to stand up for 40 minutes… and make people laugh,” said Carlton. “I’ve gained a respect for that part of the world.”
