October is Breast Cancer awareness month. The employees at Evelyn Dickerson Hair Design wanted their support by featuring monthly specials and raffling off a gift basket worth $150.
The specials run every Saturday in October, said Carley Kruse, owner of the salon. Previous specials include $2 off pink hair or feather extensions, $15 manicure with pink nail polish and complimentary pink tinsel with any service. The salon will feature any pedicure with pink nail polish Oct. 22 for $35.
During the specials the girls call themselves “the fighting fedoras”, Kruse said. They wear their fedoras and pink t-shirts every Saturday to “fight for a cure”.
“Clients come into the salon, see the girls and ask what we’re doing,” receptionist Sarah Lazzara said.
The salon also has pamphlets that clients can read to get more informed about breast cancer. Lazzara said part of the idea for the fundraiser was to raise awareness of breast cancer to the clients.
The raffle basket includes a $30 gift card, Paul Mitchell products, a cosmetics bag and more, Lazzara said. The money raised will go to Muffins for Mammograms, a program based out of Akron General Hospital.
“We’re a local business, and we wanted to support a local organization,” Kruse said.
The program helps provide mammograms to men and women who don’t have insurance or can’t afford it. Kruse said they also chose this program because early detection of breast cancer is vital. If people are able to get mammograms when they need them, it can help catch breast cancer before it becomes life threatening.
The salon has sold quite a few tickets so far, Kruse said. Tickets for the raffle are $1 for one or $5 for 10. For those seeking to donate a larger amount, checks are made out to Akron General Muffins.
“The patrons and clients have been incredibly generous with donations,” Lazzara said.
The drawing for the basket will be held at the beginning of November.
