Anthony Bartholomew, 30, associate professor of printmaking at Kent State, died Monday, Oct. 10.

Bartholomew graduated from Youngstown State University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and earned a Master’s in Fine Arts in printmaking from Kent State in 2008. He began teaching printmaking courses at Kent State the same year.

Bartholomew served as the shop manager and Artist in Residence coordinator assistant at Zygote Press, a non-profit printmaking co-op in Cleveland. He also worked as a screen printer at Jakprints, a commercial printing shop in Cleveland.

“My work and my tendencies have continued to push my ideas with relations of working with or against busy and quiet, filled and void, chromatic and achromatic, etc.,” Bartholomew wrote in an artist’s statement. “Each series appears to grow with a new characteristic or method to carry out the mission.”

Bartholomew was awarded artist residencies in Dresden, Germany and Austin, Texas. His intaglio, relief and silkscreen prints have been displayed in galleries and museums throughout Northeast Ohio, including the School of Art’s Downtown Gallery.

“Anthony was one of my very closest friends,” said Nicole Schneider, assistant director of galleries. “There are no words to describe what an extraordinary person he was. I looked up to him in so many ways.”

Funeral proceedings for family and friends will be held Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Canton. Friends may attend calling hours from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the Lamiell Funeral Home and 9-10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael’s.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zygote Press, 1410 East 30th St., Cleveland, OH 44014.

“He was a brilliant artist, and he brought so much happiness to my life in so many ways that I cannot put words to,” Schneider said. “He will be greatly missed.”
