The Kent State field hockey team traveled to Iowa on Friday to face two difficult opponents. The Iowa Hawkeyes caused Kent State’s weekend to start on a sour note by defeating the Flashes, 7-3.

With a 3-0 lead in the second half, sophomore Rebecca Lee scored from the top of the circle to cut the deficit to 3-1. Following three quick Iowa goals, all-time scoring leader Debbie Bell scored two goals in seven minutes to trim the Hawkeyes’ lead to three. However, Iowa’s Aubrey Coleman scored a goal in the 69th minute to put the score at 7-3, a lead that proved to be insurmountable for the Flashes, who fell to 0-3 on the year with a 7-3 loss.

The second game of the weekend went the way of the Flashes, as they recorded their first win. It took an extra period of play for Kent State to enter the win column, but the Flashes did what was necessary to leave the pitch with a victory. Bell scored on a penalty stroke in the 73rd minute, giving Kent State a 3-2 win over Massachusetts.

Lee scored in the 22nd minute to tie the game, and Julia Hoffman’s goal 39 minutes into the game gave Kent State a 2-1 lead. The Minutewomen’s Nicole Cordero scored nine minutes later to tie the game at two, setting up Bell to shoot the game-winner in overtime.

The Flashes will return to Kent with a 1-3 record before embarking on another weekend road trip to face Lock Haven and Temple.
