United Way is looking for volunteers to man the main concession stand at all of the home games this football season, starting with this Saturday’s game against the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

There will be six home games this season, and United Way is asking for six to eight volunteers per game. Volunteers will be expected to show up one-and-a-half to two hours before the game and will work for five to seven hours.

“We get a certain percentage of what’s taken in dollar amount,” said Barbara Boltz, a campaign chair for Kent State’s United Way chapter. “We have 10 people that volunteer. We man the windows. The food service people cook all the food, we run the registers and get the food, and for our labor, they give us a certain percentage of what’s collected through the main concession stand.”

For every dollar earned at the concession stand, 85 percent is given to United Way for services geared toward advancing the community.

“We fund programs and services, and they tend to help people with the most need in the community,” Boltz said. “Town Hall 2’s free clinic, drug and alcohol abuse (clinics), after-school programs for underprivileged children — those kinds of needs.”
