John and Rene Lacy were just two of many Silver Oaks Place residents given eviction notices in late July. More than 200 residents had roughly two months to vacate their homes.

John, 83, and Rene, 88, had lived there for 14 years and were married for 45.

Rene became sick with pneumonia and was hospitalized. She later found out her lung cancer had come back, and she died Monday, Sept. 19 at 8:45 p.m.

John came to see her afterward to say goodbye. He said he believes the stress of the move contributed to her death.

“I don’t know what I’d do without her,” John said at the beginning of her hospital stay.

The Lacys had planned to move into another apartment, but after losing his wife, John and his cat, Buddy, moved in with his daughter in Ravenna.
