Anchor Intro:

Ice and snow have students, faculty, and staff struggling to get to class. This kind of weather has a lot of people asking, “Why aren’t classes cancelled?” TV-2’s Heather Wells has the story on why we haven’t had a snow day.

Script:

NATSOT: beeping snow plow

It’s hard for KSU groundskeepers to keep up with the relentless snow we’ve been seeing all week.

And just when we think it’s coming to an end

NATSOT: beeping plow

it’s expected to start all over again.

Manager of KSU’s grounds department, Heather White, says that keeping things dry and clear is a difficult process.

WHITE: OUR PROCESS ACTUALLY STARTED THE FRIDAY PREVIOUS. UM WE DELIVERED SALT ALL OVER CAMPUS. IT TAKES 250 TONS OF SALTT JUST TO FILL ALL OF THOSE UP. AND A LOT OF THOUGHT AND A LOT OF COORDINATION UH GOES INTO IT.

Not only is shoveling, salting, and plowing taking more workers and longer hours, but it’s costing more money.

WHITE: ANNUAL BDGET THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS FOR A WINTER SEASON OF SALT HAS BEEN ABOUT 68,000 DOLLARS.

STANDUP: IT’S DAYS LIKE TODAY THAT ARE MOST FRUSTTRATING FOR STUDENTS AND THE PEOPLE OF KENT, CITY OFFICIALS AS WELL AS THE UNIVERSITY ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO KEEP THINGS SAFE AND CLEAR. BUT IS IT ENOUGH? AND SOME STUDENTS ARE WHY WE’RE EVEN HAVING SCHOOL ON A DAY LIKE TODAY.

BRANDON: NO I’M NOT HAPPY, ACTUALLY I’M KINDA MAD THEY MADE US WALK IN THIS.

Students across campus trudge through snow and ice to get to class and one of them is sophomore Brandon Lazenko and he’s upset about having to walk to class in these icy conditions.

BRANDON: I ACTUALLY HAD A DIFFICULT TIME GETTING TO CLASS TODAY BECAUSE I HAVE TO WALK FROM UNIVERSITY AND IT’S NOT THAT EASY OF A WALK.

But there’s a process as to how classes are cancelled.

WHITE: IT’S NOT JUST A NUMBER, IT’S SORT OF, WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN? IT’S A CONVERSATION THAT HAPPENS WITH A NUMBER OF PEOPLE. UM A CONVERSATION WITH ME, MY BOSS, THE DIRECTOR OF CAMPUS ENVIRONMENT OPERATIONS, THE VICE PRESIDENT OF FACILITY PLANNING, UH THE CHIEF OF POLICE, WE’RE ALL TALKING THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND THOUGH THE SNOW STORM AND EVEN THROUGH THE NIGHT.

For TV-2 News, I’m Heather Wells.
