The Department of Geology is presenting, Gail Christeson, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Her lecture, “The Chicxulub Structure: What an Impact!” is at 2:15 p.m. in Room 234 of McGilvrey Hall.

Christeson, with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, is discussing her research on the Chicxulub crater, which is thought to be the result of the asteroid that struck the earth 65 million years ago and led to the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Christeson is explaining the work she has done using seismic techniques to study the crater on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and future plans to better understand how the crater was formed.

Daniel Holm, geology professor and chair, said those who attend with benefit by learning what they know about the submarine architecture of this crater.
