The sororities at Kent State are gearing up for Sigma Chi’s Derby Days, a week of events that brings in donations for Akron Children’s Hospital.
“It’s all about raising money for the children’s hospital. It’s intended to be a fun week, and it’s a fun time for us and the sororities that compete,” said Massimo Terzigni, Sigma Chi’s annotator who coordinated the week’s events.
There is a different event each day of Derby Days where sororities compete against one another. They will be partaking from April 5 through April 9.
Sorority members will be participating in events like Penny Wars, sidewalk painting and “Pie a Chi.”
“A lot of the reason [the children’s hospital] can do the things they do is because of the money that people donate and because of the different philanthropies that go to the children’s hospital,” Terzigni said. “They’re really grateful for everything that we can do, and we really focus all of our effort toward this week so we can raise as much money as we can.”
Those who aren’t in a sorority can participate by purchasing Children’s Miracle Network’s paper hot air balloons from Sigma Chi in the student center, which donate money to the philanthropy. The fraternity will also have a donation box that anyone can contribute to.
“It goes beyond fraternities and sororities and all of Greek life,” Terzigni said. “Anything that people can do to help out, I think they should.”
