A group of student organizations are coming together at 8 p.m. tonight in the Oscar Ritchie Lecture Hall to address safety on campus.

Black United Students president Dylan Sellers woke up yesterday morning, saw an e-mail that broke news of the second robbery that occurred this weekend and decided action needed to be taken. He sat down with BUS and started calling leaders of student organizations to unite for an emergency meeting.

“We’re a family – all the members of Kent State University,” Sellers said. “Something tragic like that should not go unnoticed.”

All students are welcome to attend, but it is especially important for students who live on campus to attend and be aware of their safety, said Scott Sherwood, executive director of Undergraduate Student Government, one of the groups participating in the discussion.

Other student groups confirmed to participate in the meeting are the Collegiate Business Organization, College Democrats, Kent African Student Association, KSU-NAACP, Pan-African Studies faculty and staff, PRIDE!Kent and the Spanish and Latino Student Association.

Sellers said because the suspects of these robberies have been black males, they’ll discuss racial profiling. He wants the meeting to send a message to the university that students are serious about their safety.
