Kent State loses to Miami in overtime
The Kent State field hockey team’s attempt to gain its second-straight Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship was cut short by Miami today. The Flashes fell to the RedHawks 2-1, knocking the team out of the tournament in Muncie, Ind.
Sophomore forward Debbie Bell scored the first goal of the game in the 41st minute off a pass from senior forward Laurie Wilkins. Miami quickly answered four minutes later with a tally by freshman midfielder Rachael Walz.
Bell led the Flashes with seven shots, but Kent State failed to outshoot Miami for the second-straight match against the RedHawks.
Neither team was able to find the back of the cage during the rest of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Sophomore midfielder Amanda Seeley scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to advance the RedHawks to the MAC Tournament Championship game.
Junior goalkeeper Caroline Suitch saved six goals on the day, with four of the saves coming in the second half.
Kent State’s last overtime match was against Central Michigan in 2002.
