Flashes tied with RedHawks in MAC standings

The Kent State field hockey team suffered its second Mid-American Conference loss against Miami, 2-1, today.

“The first half we definitely didn’t posses the ball like we needed to,” Kent State coach Kathleen Schanne said. “I think the second half we definitely did much better.”

The Flashes (11-7, 7-2 MAC) are now tied for first with the RedHawks and need to win tomorrow’s final regular-season game to maintain a first-round bye in the MAC tournament.

Defensively, the Flashes had their work cut out for them. In the first half Miami shot the ball 10 times, while Kent State had no opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Caroline Suitch saved five goals in the first half and totaled eight for the game.

MIami midfielder Maggie Marcum scored the only goal in the first half. Kent State was unable to answer until sophomore forward Debbie Bell scored in the second half off an assist from junior midfielder Rachel Miller.

Miami’s offense answered five minutes later to top the Flashes.

“I’m ready to put today behind us and look forward to tomorrow,” Schanne said.

Kent State will welcome Ball State to Murphy-Mellis Field tomorrow for the final home game of the season. Seniors Allison Kittelberger, Laurie Wilkins and Kara Rhodenbaugh will be honored at the game.
