KSU crowned its new royalty

In a nail-biting Kent State vs. Bowling Green football game, the players on the field weren’t the only ones tackling nerves.

Benjamin Spott and Brittni Cortright, crowned Homecoming king and queen for 2009, said they were both anxious and excited before they were announced as the winners.

During halftime, Spott and Cortright linked arms and walked across the field after the marching band played Neil Diamond’s “I’m a Believer.”

Spott and Cortright were selected by peer vote as king and queen out of 12 potential candidates. The seniors said they are deeply appreciative to be crowned as Homecoming king and queen.

“It’s the ultimate honor as student body representatives and a great way to complete the college experience,” Spott said.

The king and queen agreed Kent State students have been more spirited this year. Spott said the athletic department teamed up with the Greek community to help both sides benefit in efforts to increase attendance and overall Kent State spirit at games.

“As far as the school spirit, it was great to see the cheering, painted faces – and the nice weather,” Cortright said.

Spott and Cortright have been consistently involved on campus, and although this year brings their time at Kent State to a bittersweet close, they said the experience of Homecoming was unforgettable.

“It’s a big thank you from everyone at Kent State and an awesome memory,” Cortright said. “Plus it gives me a chance to come back here for Homecoming 2010.”
