Kent State football beats Ohio 20-11
October 22, 2009
The Kent State football team defeated Ohio 20-11 behind a strong defensive performance and balanced offensive attack.
“I just thought it was a great team win by our guys,” Kent State coach Doug Martin said. “Just like I told them, I’m not sure we’re great in any area, but we’re really good together, and we’re playing really good team football right now in all phases.”
Kent State’s defense intercepted Ohio senior quarterback Theo Scott and freshman quarterback Tyler Tettleton three times and recorded seven sacks.
Senior defensive linemen Kevin Hogan and Sam Frist combined with junior defensive end Monte Simmons for a total of five sacks. The Flashes’ defense held Ohio’s rushing offense to -9 yards on 29 carries.
“Our (defensive) line played great today,” junior linebacker Cobrani Mixon said. “All week we’ve been hearing about how (Ohio) doesn’t give up sacks and that motivated them.”
After taking a 6-3 lead in the third quarter, Kent State scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Freshman quarterback Spencer Keith completed 23-of-38 passes for 273 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Keith completed 14 passes to sophomore wide receiver Sam Kirkland and freshman wide receiver Tyshon Goode for a total of 185 yards.
Sophomore running back Jacquise Terry rushed for 110 yards on 31 carries.
The Flashes capitalized on scoring opportunities by converting on four of five red zone chances.
Kent State returns home next weekend to play Western Michigan.
