“Tangomania” ball ends night of events
The Kent State University Museum is celebrating the opening of the Deco Tour in conjunction with the Massillon Museum on June 27.
Art Deco is an art form characterized by geometric shapes and bold lines that became popular in the1920s and 1930s. The style was used in architecture, interior design and poster art.
Both museums are holding all day events with themes from the 1920s and 1930s. The themes will be expressed through art, fashion, automobiles and dancing.
The day begins at 10 a.m. at the Massillon Museum where guests can view 1930s automobiles, tour a gallery exhibit about the construction of the Empire State Building and listen to a lecture given by museum curator Alexandra Nicholis. All events are free.
During the afternoon and evening, the festivities continue at the Kent State Museum where tours of three Art Deco exhibits can be seen.
The exhibits include: Great American Glass: The Roaring Twenties and Depression Era, The Kokoon Arts Club: Cleveland Revels and Gazette du Bon Ton.
“Tangomania,” a masked ball at the KSU Museum, is scheduled to finish off the night with music and dancing with help from “Cuidado,” a Spanish band from Duquesne University.
The ball is open anyone regardless of dancing ability.
“We have a lot of tickets sold from people that do not dance. You can see it as performance and a dance,” said Anne Bissonnette, Kent State Museum curator.
She said she hopes to see faculty, students and guests fully embrace the evening.
All tours are free with museum admission. Faculty and staff can attend the museum for free with a Kent State ID while general admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children.
