Fraternity hosts Shabbat tonight at Hillel
April 2, 2009
Alpha Epsilon Pi will host Greek Shabbat for the entire Greek community from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hillel Jewish Student Center.
Shabbat is the seventh day of the Jewish week and a day of rest in Judaism, observed from sundown Friday until Saturday night. Visitors don’t have to be Jewish or Greek to attend.
“Hillel asked us to host a Shabbat for them, and we wanted to showcase Hillel to the rest of the Greek community,” said Alpha Epsilon Pi President Ben Spott.
Happy hour will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a candle lighting service at 5:30 p.m. The Shabbat service will begin at 6 p.m., and dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m.
Dinner will consist of chicken, salad, soup and several helpings of bread because Passover will begin next Wednesday, and for observant students, bread will be off the menu for eight days. Cost of dinner is $5 for students and $8 for non students.
“The Greek Shabbat will act as a way to show unity throughout the Greek community,” Spott said.
