Herb Page, Kent State director of golf, hoped the men’s team could play up to its potential at the NCAA Preview Tournament this weekend at the Inverness Club in Toledo.

Placing second to last – 14th out of 15 teams – in the third tournament of the fall season isn’t what Page had in mind.

“I offer no excuses. We just didn’t play very well again,” said Page, who also coaches the men’s team.

The Flashes posted a 45-over-par 897 for the weekend. Kent State’s most disappointing round was the final round of play, as they shot 22-over-par 306 to drop them from a tie for 10th place to 14th place.

Oklahoma State, which finished fourth at the 2008 NCAA Championship, won the tournament, led by freshman Morgan Hoffmann, who tied for first with Tennessee sophomore Robin Wingardh. Tournament host and fellow Mid-American Conference program Toledo finished last, shooting a 71-over-par 923.

Sophomore Brett Cairns, who averaged 73.23 in final round play as a freshman, led the Flashes, shooting a 3-under-par 68 in the second round and finishing with 7-over-par 220 (77-68-75) to tie for 29th in the tournament.

“Brett Cairns had a really great round (Sunday), but overall we’re just very, very inconsistent,” Page said.

Sophomore John Hahn, the 2008 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, finished one stroke behind Cairns with 8-over-par 221 (73-71-77) to tie for 31st.

“We didn’t do anything really great and the scores show it,” Page said. “I saw a few bright lights, but not many.”

Page plans to take the next three days to regroup before the team heads to the Windon Memorial Classic in Glenview, Ill., to play its second-to-last tournament of the fall.

“I think we’re capable of doing a lot better,” Page said.
