Adult students to be recognized this week
October 12, 2008
Events include information fairs, workshops
Everyone has responsibilities, but non-traditional adult learners tend to carry more, as they juggle caring for a family, jobs, community-related commitments, classes and homework.
In an effort to promote university-wide recognition and appreciation for adult learners’ accomplishments, the Adult Student Center will host its annual Adult Learner Week today through Friday.

“We take the opportunity of this week annually to recognize and extend our appreciation for the expertise and enrichment that adult students bring to the campus of Kent State University,” said LuWanda Higgins, program coordinator for the Adult Student Center.
This week is the fourth annual Adult Learner Week, and it will kick off with a brown bag lunch and a discussion about the success of adult learners. From noon to 1:30 p.m. in White Hall, students can come discuss techniques and strategies that adult students use to learn and achieve academic success.
Tomorrow, representatives from more than 35 on-campus and community organizations, such as Cleveland Scholarship Programs, Inc. and Cleveland Heights Veterans Center, will fill the second floor of the Student Center for a scholarship and information fair.
The fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students are encouraged to attend to receive materials about the different organizations and to sign up for book scholarship drawings. There will be four $100 drawings and one $50 drawing. The drawings for the book scholarships will occur after the information fair has taken place on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the Student Quality Advisory Committee will have a meeting beginning at 8 a.m. Students are welcome to attend and participate in discussions about issues important to them. Campus administrators and faculty will also be available to answer any questions from students.
Later in the day, representatives from the Financial Aid Office will host an interactive presentation for residents in Allerton Apartments called “Paying for College.” The purpose of the event is to assist students in understanding financial aid and to show them how to search for scholarships.
Student financial aid representatives will be showing students how to view their financial aid awards through FlashLine. They will also be available to answer any questions regarding financial aid.
The weeklong event will end on Friday night with a “Fall Fling.” The event provides the opportunity for students to bring friends and family together to enjoy an evening out with food and swimming. Pizza, veggies, munchies and beverages will be provided. Students and members of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center are free. Admission costs $3 for adults and $2 for children.
