The Poynter Kent State Media Ethics Workshop, presented by the Poynter Institute, will welcome students for the first time.

The workshop is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in Franklin Hall’s First Energy Auditorium.

The idea of the workshop is to “bring Poynter to you,” said Jan Leach, Media Law Center director and assistant professor of journalism and mass communication. Kent State previously hosted the workshop at the Kent Stark campus.

During the workshop, Jay Rosen, New York University professor and author of journalism blog “PressThink,” will deliver the keynote speech at 11:50 a.m.

Students will be able to participate in discussions about ethics. Working with professional journalists, students will have the opportunity to help form a set of online guidelines for professionals, Leach said.

“The workshop may issue a set of national guidelines,” Leach said.

These guidelines, however, will only be through the Poynter Institute, she added. The Online News Association already has its own set of national online guidelines published.
