Soccer team wins home opener

The Kent State soccer team rebounded from its first lost of the season to win its first home game in overtime against Southern-Illinois Edwardsville, 2-1 on Sunday.

Junior midfielder Catharine Marosszeky scored on a throw-in pass from senior forward Caitlin Hester at the 95:20 mark. The Flashes (2-1) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game at the 25:11 mark with a goal from Hester.

The Flashes held a 12 to six advantage in the shot category and held the Cougars to one shot in the second period. Sophomore goalkeeper recorded five saves in the win.

Prior to Hester’s goal, the Cougars scored on a goal by senior forward Jenny Kates at the 19:19 mark. The Cougars played a physical game and were called for 12 fouls to the Flashes’ six and were called for two yellow cards.

The Flashes will travel to Baton Rouge, La. to play Louisiana State on Friday at 8 p.m.
