The Center for Student Involvement is accepting applications for Week of Welcome 2008 coordinators through Nov. 2.

Applications are available in the Center for Student Involvement, Room 226 in the Student Center. They can also be downloaded online at http://dept.kent.edu/orientation.

Brandon Jenkins, graduate assistant in the Center for Student Involvement, said five positions are available for the Week of Welcome 2008. The positions include:

• Coordinator for Success Cycles, who is responsible for planning Saturday sessions required of incoming freshmen.

• Two coordinators for community relations, who are responsible for organizing events such as Blast Off! and the Spirit Festival, in addition to commuter programming and other evening programming.

• Two coordinators for WOW leader staffing, who are responsible for advertising WOW leader positions and hiring WOW leaders.

Jenkins said the WOW coordinator position is a different opportunity to build program experience and it’s a good resumé builder.

Applicants should be motivated and well-organized in addition to being flexible and open-minded with good communication skills and a strong work ethic. Jenkins also wants a “well-rounded” coordinator staff.

Rachelle Fraise, a coordinator for WOW leader staffing this year and a former WOW leader, said it’s also very important for WOW coordinators to be personable.

“No one’s going to walk up to someone for help if they look like they’re being bothered,” Fraise said. “A lot of people might come bug you and get on your nerves, and you’re going to be asked the same things over and over.”

Fraise, junior integrated mathematics major, said working the Week of Welcome requires patience and knowledge of the university.

“If there’s something (WOW coordinators and leaders) don’t know, they have to be able to direct students to where they need to go to find out,” she said.

Although it may seem like a lot of work at times, Fraise said it’s a fun working environment.

“Even though it is work, it’s a fun job, and you’ll never get this experience with anything else,” she said. “Helping people is what it’s all about.”
