Women’s soccer loses to Ohio,
September 30, 2007
The Kent State women’s soccer team received a conference loss, a conference win and a record-tying goal over the weekend in games against Ohio University and The University of Akron.
Friday at Ohio, Kent State allowed an opening goal to the Bobcats at the 14:14 mark when Ohio’s Rachael Goulding headed in a corner kick. The assist was credited to Erika Schmitt.
In the second half, Kent State senior Brittany Fracasso tied up the game thanks to sophomore midfielder Jackie Barath’s crossing pass. Her shot got past Ohio goalkeeper Jess MacLean and found the lower right side of the net for Fracasso’s second goal of the season.
Play remained tied for the rest of regulation, as well as during the first overtime period. In the second overtime, Ohio was able to capitalize on a loose-ball goal to win.
Kent State goalkeeper Kris Nelson and Ohio midfielder Lindsey Price raced to gain possession of a loose ball. Price won the battle and fired a pass across field to Schmitt who punched it into an open goal. The goal came with less than four minutes to play in double overtime.
Yesterday, Kent State continued conference play against Akron hoping to earn their first conference win of the season. Tied at one at halftime, the Flashes used a strong offense in the second half to win 3-1.
A corner kick by senior Lisa Kurz connected with sophomore midfielder Catharine Marosszeky at the 73:35 mark of play to put the Flashes ahead with a lead they would not relinquish.
Later in the second half, senior forward Kimberly Dimitroff sealed the win for Kent State with a goal in the 87th minute. The goal came off of a pass from junior midfielder Caitlin Hester. Dimitroff also scored in the 24th minute of the first half.
The lone Akron goal came from Danielle Walsh after a corner kick in the 40th minute.
Kent State managed to beat Akron in nearly every category statistically. Shots were 15-7 in the Flashes favor, as were corner kicks, 7-4. This was after Ohio had a lopsided advantage in shots and shots on goal two days earlier.
The two goals for Dimitroff tie her with former Flash Lauren Caminati, who has held the goal-scoring record since the end of the 2003 season. With one more goal, Dimitroff will have a total of 30, and the number one spot in Kent State soccer history.
Kent State now stands at 3-5-1 on the season, 1-1-0 in Mid-American Conference play. The Flashes return to the pitch Friday Oct. 5 at Northern Illinois.
