Fraternity to host self-defense night
September 10, 2007
Phi Sigma Pi, a national coed honors fraternity, will host a self-defense information and instruction session at 8 p.m. tonight in the Kiva.
The overall goal of the event is for participants to learn basic self-defense techniques that would prepare them for a potentially dangerous situation, said Lyndsay Elliott, junior public relations major and public relations director for Phi Sigma Pi.
Elliott said especially with the recent policy advisory concerning a sexual assault that occurred on or near campus, it is more important than ever for students to be aware of their surroundings and possess skills to protect themselves.
Elliott also said Phi Sigma Pi prides itself on being an organization based on scholarship, leadership and fellowship, and this event will help fulfill the scholarship component by educating participants.
The Green Dragon Kung Fu Club will instruct students on basic techniques, while also providing a martial arts demonstration. The event is open to everyone.
