Baseball team ends season with division championship

The season went as expected for the young but talented baseball team, associate head coach Mike Birkbeck said.
The Flashes ended the season as Mid-American East Division Champions and MAC Tournament Champions at 33-26, winning 16 of the last 19 games.
The team played what would be its last game against the University of Miami at the Columbia Regional Tournament June 2. Miami held a commanding 8-1 lead after seven innings of play.
But in the bottom of the eighth, the Flashes began to come back with six runs to close the gap 8-7.
“Their pitchers let us back into the game,” Birkbeck said about the comeback. “We were able to take advantage.”
With two outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Miami closer Danny Gil was able to strike out Anthony Gallas to end the season for the Flashes, eliminating them from tournament play.
“As a coaching staff we are proud of the way our guys hung in throughout the season and played lights out the last four weeks,” Birkbeck said.
The University of Miami lost to Louisville and was eliminated in the regional semi-final game on Sunday.
