‘Dom’s Day’ awarded first place at Flix Fest
April 25, 2007
A stop-motion short film named Dom’s Day won first place last night at the second annual Black Squirrel Flix Fest held in Nixson Hall.
Dom’s Day is about a day that includes not using your hands to brush your teeth, sliding up and down railings in the Student Center and flying across Risman Plaza.
There were 17 short movies in all. The only requirement to enter a movie was that it had to be less than 15 minutes. There was comedy, suspense, documentary and mockumentary.
“There was a great variety,” said Dave Smeltzer, an electronic media assistant professor. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t show everything.”
The movies were judged by students in the Film Fest Committee.
“It took six to seven hours to watch and judge the movies,” said Morgan Marucco, a freshman electronic media major. “We basically judged on how much we liked them, time they put into it, quality and overall creativity.”
Black Squirrel Radio provided music for the event and gave T-shirts and CDs to attendees who answered trivia questions about music.
The College of Communication and Information Residential Commons and First-Year Experience sponsored the event.
The different winners won gift certificates to Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Campus Camera and the University Bookstore.
Campus Camera donated $50 and the University Bookstore donated $25 to help with the prizes.
“I thought they were really creative,” said Marianne Warzinski, program coordinator for CCI Commons. “The films really ran the gamut.”
