Gallery showcases honors students’ art
February 23, 2007
The Honors College and the School of Art will host a reception for a student gallery today from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Honors College lounge.
The gallery, which opened Feb. 20, features works created by Kent State honors students. Larry Andrews, dean of the Honors College, said the student exhibition features not only visual art, but theatrical art as well.
“(We’re) going to have a running DVD from the theater and dance students,” Andrews said. “This gallery was open to all students in the College of Art and (the School of) Fashion Design and Merchandising, although we didn’t have any entries (from fashion students).”
Andrews said the reception will include a panel of two judges and the students who entered their work for display will have a chance to compete for prizes.
One prize is what Andrews called a “purchase prize.”
“I’ll negotiate for a work . to add as a permanent part of our collection,” Andrews said. “We’re always trying to expand the number of pieces on the walls . normally we like to display our student work.”
Andrews said that he sent invitations to various administration officials in hopes of getting them acquainted with the students at the reception.
“We invited everybody, and I hope the provost will come,” Andrews said. “I don’t know offhand who is coming, but I also invited my advisory board for the Honors College.”
The gallery will be open until March 23.
