Kent State’s chapter of the NAACP discussed its goals for the year at its first mass meeting last night in the Student Center.

KSU-NAACP President Shanelle Smith said the organization’s goal is to show it is recognized nationally and locally. She also said that as a member of KSU-NAACP, students can vote on national NAACP policy.

“Our main goal is to educate students about national issues affecting them,” she said.

Vice President Preston Mitchum said although KSU-NAACP works closely with Black United Students, the organizations are different.

“The main thing that sets us apart is that we’re a national organization,” Mitchum said.

Upcoming KSU-NAACP events include “An Afternoon with Cousin Jeff,” featuring Jeff Johnson, host of BET’s “The Jeff Johnson Chronicles.” The event lasts from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday in Room 317 of the Student Center.

The group will also help other student organizations, such as with tomorrow’s “Get out the Vote” rally in Risman Plaza and World AIDS Awareness Week from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1.

George Garrison, professor of Pan-African studies and KSU-NAACP adviser, told the students present that college chapters of the NAACP are “great opportunities for students like you to get civically involved.”

KSU-NAACP meetings are held every other Thursday in Room 317 of the Student Center.

Membership dues for the organization are $30 for students 21 and older, and $10 for those 20 and younger. Students interested in joining the organization should e-mail [email protected] or see membership chair Brittney Humphrey. The deadline for registration is Oct. 24.
