Former KSU president named as regional group’s interim director

President emeritus Carol Cartwright was named the Northeast Ohio Council of Higher Education’s interim director Friday as the board continues its search for a new director.

NOCHE is a regional organization that works to bring an economic competitive advantage to Northeast Ohio through collaborative efforts between higher education institutions and business communities.

Cartwright will work with 26 colleges and universities from 14 counties and the board’s business and civic leaders. NOCHE wants to find a new director by the first quarter of 2007.

The former Kent State president seemed well-equipped for the job, said NOCHE board chairman Robert Rawson, Jr., as she served on the group’s board of trustees during her 15 years as president.

During the past nine months, the board adopted a plan to create increased public support and participation in higher education, generate better retention rates and build a stronger regional economy. Cartwright will be responsible for guiding these plans starting Nov. 1.

“I know firsthand the valuable role NOCHE plays in supporting the economic health of the region by driving greater business-higher education collaboration,” she said. “My priorities will be guiding the launch of the new strategic plan and making sure the organization continues to receive broad support throughout the region.”

Cartwright is still employed at Kent State as President Lester Lefton’s adviser. NOCHE will reimburse the university for the expectant two days a week she will spend working for the organization.
