They’ve taken off their clothes and taken back the night, but won’t be burning any bras.

“We’re not a bunch of man haters,” said Emily Costa, Kent State Feminist Union president. “People should start to get over that misconception – we’re open to everyone.”

The Feminist Union, a group making strides toward gender equality, will raise awareness, address transgender life and continue to break through the university’s red tape to fund events and improve group organization this year. Penciling in its first “Take Back the Night” anti-violence march for mid to late October, the union also looks to bring more speakers and positive body images to Kent State – with the help of a few select portraits.

“A big program last year was ‘Loving Your Body,’ where we used tasteful nudes on our calendar,” Costa said. “We’ll have them at our meetings in the Student Center starting Monday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m.”

Costa said the 10- to 20-member Feminist Union discusses different views of feminism, religious and otherwise, at its meetings and will be exploring stances on the transgender community.
