SALSA, Kent State’s Spanish and Latino Student Association, wants to eliminate misconceptions about its group.

“At BlastOff! we kind of got the vibe that students didn’t know we have a Latin club,” SALSA president Rodrigo Uribe said. “We want to reach the community and get the SALSA name out.”

Starting with its “Latin Lounge” meet and greet, SALSA is looking to schedule guest comedians, Hispanic week and fundraisers to build student awareness this semester. Accompanying those activities, SALSA will also host more dances than in years past.

“Lots of people showed up for our dances in the Rathskeller,” said Uribe, who hopes to capitalize on the recent popularity of reggaeton rap, such as Daddy Yankee, to draw new crowds to the association.

Both Uribe and Jen Guerrieri, former SALSA president, admit SALSA has been a relatively small group, but a group that is open to everybody.

“You just have to have an open mind with other cultures to be a part of SALSA,” Uribe said.

“Latin Lounge” is tentatively scheduled for an upcoming Thursday, while SALSA meetings traditionally are held at the Student Center every Tuesday at 8 p.m.
