Kent State publishes prestigious journal
November 10, 2005
Many students and staff might not think “Review of Futures Markets,” a new journal published by Kent State, could be of much help to them, but it can teach them how to hedge a spider.
The journal was originally published from 1982 until 1991 by the Chicago Board of Trade as a guide for those interested in derivatives and future markets.
About a year and a half ago, talks surfaced of reviving the journal, and Mark Holder, chair of the department of finance at Kent State, was selected to be editor of the new publication.
“Kent State’s very closely coordinated with the board of trade,” Holder said. “I’ve got a fairly good understanding of the market.”
The journal, during its time of publication, was one of the highest-rated finance journals available, based on the number of citations.
Holder said the publication of the journal is beneficial to students and the College of Business because it helps to attract top professors and students to the university.
“It’s pretty prestigious to have a journal at a university,” he said. “There’s kind of a halo effect.”
Kent State was able to revive the journal with help from a number of people and places. The provost’s office gave a grant to use toward the project, Holder said, and the journal is published in cooperation with the Institute for Financial Markets.
The institute focuses on educating people on futures markets, teaching ethics to the market’s professionals and delivering data to them.
Trish Foshee, director of sales and marketing for the institute, said the journal fits in with the institute’s focus on education.
“It offers a higher level of education for those more sophisticated,” she said. “(It’s) geared for a more specific audience” than other institute teaching tools.
